# Award and upgrade search tools, compared

If you hold upgrade certificates, pick the tool by airline. For American systemwide upgrades, ExpertFlyer's Elite tier and 2LNR both track the inventory those certificates clear into, and 2LNR also covers Delta Global and Regional Upgrade Certificates and Alaska first-class upgrade space. As of August 2026 seats.aero Pro had upgrade finders for Alaska first class, Air Canada eUpgrades, Emirates, United PlusPoints and JetBlue Mint, and as of September 2026 PointsYeah Premium offers United upgrade alerts. If you're spending miles rather than certificates, seats.aero, AwardFares and PointsYeah all search award space more broadly than 2LNR, and one of those three is probably your better first stop.

Written by 2LNR, so read the 2LNR column with that in mind. The picks below name the tool that wins each question, including the four times that tool isn't ours.

**The short version:** upgrade space and award space are different inventory, and most tools in this category are built for award space. Award seats: start with seats.aero for open-ended discovery, AwardFares for comparing two programs head to head, PointsYeah if you want the strongest free tier or hotel awards as well. One-off fare-bucket lookups on almost any airline: ExpertFlyer. Certificate inventory watched over time on American, Delta and Alaska: 2LNR. Several of these overlap, and running two of them is normal.

## Six tools, side by side

Features and pricing are as of July 2026 unless a cell gives a later date, and trace to the vendor pages and review coverage in Sources. "Not advertised" means the capability appears in neither the vendor's own materials nor those reviews; it's not a claim that the tool can't do it. Tell us if something here is out of date.

## Which one to start with

Sorted by the question you're actually asking, not by which product we sell. Four of these seven answers aren't 2LNR.

### "Where can I go on the points I have?" → seats.aero

Open-ended discovery across many programs at once is an aggregator's job, and seats.aero answers it instantly because it collects the results ahead of time. Its free tier covers the next 60 days and includes availability alerts, which is a genuinely generous free product. If you have transferable points and no fixed destination, start here, not with us.

### "Which program should I transfer to for this trip?" → AwardFares

AwardFares searches two loyalty programs against each other on Gold and five on Diamond, live rather than from a cache, and Diamond refreshes as often as once a minute. Running the programs side by side in one view is the right shape for a transfer decision, and it's faster than checking each program in turn. Its Journey Planner is also the better tool if you're constructing a multi-segment routing by hand.

### "I want a strong free tool, or hotel awards too" → PointsYeah

PointsYeah has the most capable free tier in this group: flight and hotel alerts and the Daydream Explorer without paying, and Premium at $19.99 a month or $119.95 a year mainly widens the date window and raises the alert counts. It also searches hotel award space, including stays you can book with a free-night certificate. NerdWallet named it their 2026 pick for award search, and that's a fair call for the award-search question.

### "Is fare bucket X open on this exact flight?" → ExpertFlyer

For a one-off inventory lookup on almost any airline, and for anyone who already thinks in RBD codes, ExpertFlyer's breadth is unmatched by anything else here. Its free plan gives permanent seat-map access for more than 400 airlines and one standing notification with no credit card, which is more free capability than 2LNR's free plan offers on that axis. If you want the mechanics rather than a tool, our [fare class availability guide](https://2lnr.com/guides/fare-class-availability.md) explains what those buckets mean.

### "Will my systemwide upgrade clear on this route?" → ExpertFlyer Elite or 2LNR

This is the one question the award tools don't answer at all. An American systemwide upgrade clears against C-class inventory (A class for Flagship First), which is a separate bucket from award space, so a search that finds award seats can be showing you nothing about your certificate. ExpertFlyer's Elite tier, at $239.88 a year, has an expanded American systemwide upgrade search with exact seat counts and a calendar to 330 days. 2LNR tracks the same inventory on every plan, free for the next 14 days and across all 331 days on Pro, and also covers Delta and Alaska, which Elite's expanded search doesn't. The [2LNR vs ExpertFlyer page](https://2lnr.com/compare/expertflyer.md) works through that trade properly.

### "Tell me when space opens, without me checking" → 2LNR

Every tool here has some form of alert, and the difference is the ceiling. ExpertFlyer caps standing notifications per tier, at one on free and up to 250 on Premium and Elite. AwardFares caps Live alerts at 30 on Gold and 500 on Diamond. 2LNR Pro has no cap on alert rules, and the calendar itself is the standing watch rather than something you configure per flight. If you watch two flights a year, a cap is irrelevant and the cheaper tool wins; if you watch a whole route across a quarter, it decides the comparison. [Alerts vs notifications, in detail](https://2lnr.com/compare/expertflyer-notifications.md).

### "Which dates in this month have space?" → 2LNR

A search box answers the dates you type in, once, so watching a flexible month means repeat searches against whatever allowance your plan carries. A calendar answers the whole month at once and keeps answering it. That's a difference in the shape of the tool rather than in coverage, and it's worked through without naming any product in [monitoring vs searching](https://2lnr.com/guides/monitoring-vs-searching.md).

## ExpertFlyer vs seats.aero

These two aren't really competitors; they answer different questions. ExpertFlyer is an inventory lookup: you name a flight and a date and it tells you which fare and award buckets are open, on close to any airline. seats.aero is an award aggregator: you name a rough intent and it returns award space it has already collected across 20-plus mileage programs at once.

Pick ExpertFlyer if the flight is already chosen and you want to read its buckets, if you want free permanent seat maps, or if you're an American elite who will use the Elite tier's systemwide upgrade search. Pick seats.aero if the destination is still open, if you want results in one pass rather than one query per program, or if the free tier's 60-day window covers your planning horizon. One material gap in ExpertFlyer's award coverage: it lost United MileagePlus and LifeMiles data in October 2023, and seats.aero carries those programs.

ExpertFlyer vs point.me vs seats.aero: ExpertFlyer reads one route and date at a time, point.me runs a real-time award search with booking instructions plus a separate concierge, and seats.aero aggregates award space from 26 loyalty programs. Of the three, only ExpertFlyer checks American systemwide and Delta upgrade space, with an expanded American search on Elite. The [point.me comparison](https://2lnr.com/compare/point-me.md) has the rest.

On price, ExpertFlyer Basic at $6.99 a month is the cheapest paid entry point in this whole roundup; seats.aero Pro at $9.99 a month or $99.99 a year buys a wider award net rather than deeper single-flight detail. For upgrade space, ExpertFlyer's Basic and Premium plans check American systemwide upgrade inventory route by route and Elite adds an expanded search; as of August 2026 seats.aero Pro had upgrade finders for Alaska first class, Air Canada eUpgrades, Emirates, United PlusPoints and JetBlue Mint.

## seats.aero vs AwardFares

Cached breadth against live depth. seats.aero collects award space across 20-plus mileage programs ahead of time and serves it instantly, so it's fast and wide but a listing can already be gone; its Pro tier adds live search on any route. AwardFares runs searches when you ask, live on the paid tiers across roughly 17 programs, so results are current but metered: 100 searches a day on Gold, unlimited on Diamond.

Choose seats.aero for open-ended "where can I go" exploration, for a free tier that still returns real results in the next 60 days, and for the Partner API and browser extension if you want award data alongside a normal flight search. Choose AwardFares for a specific trip you're trying to solve, for comparing two or five programs against each other in one view, for its Journey Planner when you're building a routing by hand, and for Diamond's near-real-time refresh if you're chasing space that moves.

On price they land close: seats.aero Pro is $9.99 a month or $99.99 a year, AwardFares Gold is $9.99 a month with annual billing about 17 percent less, and AwardFares Diamond doubles that at $19.99 a month. Both have a free tier, and both free tiers show you cached rather than live results. Of the two, only seats.aero Pro had upgrade finders as of August 2026; upgrade tracking isn't advertised for AwardFares. Our own head-to-head pages, [2LNR vs seats.aero](https://2lnr.com/compare/seats-aero.md) and [2LNR vs AwardFares](https://2lnr.com/compare/awardfares.md), cover each of them against us; this section isn't about us.

## PointsYeah, and PointsYeah vs seats.aero

PointsYeah searches 21 airline programs and six hotel programs by NerdWallet's count, and it has the strongest free tier in this group: flight, hotel and deal alerts and the Daydream Explorer cost nothing. Premium is $19.99 a month or $119.95 a year as of September 2026. It mostly widens the date window and raises the alert counts, and it now includes United upgrade alerts. You can search hotel stays by points or by free-night certificate.

Against seats.aero specifically: the two overlap heavily on airline award search, and the split is scope against depth. PointsYeah is broader in kind, because hotel search is built in, free-night certificates included, and its deal search filters by the programs you hold points in; seats.aero is deeper in the airline lane, with more airline programs, a Partner API and a browser extension that surfaces award pricing next to a cash search. If your points are spread across hotel and airline programs and you'd rather not pay, start with PointsYeah. If you're chasing airline award space specifically and want the widest net plus developer access, seats.aero is the stronger tool. Their upgrade tools differ too: as of August 2026 seats.aero Pro had upgrade finders for five airlines, and as of September 2026 PointsYeah Premium offers United upgrade alerts.

There's no 2LNR vs PointsYeah page, because the products barely overlap: PointsYeah is award-and-hotel search, 2LNR is upgrade and award availability tracked over time on a calendar. The [compare hub](https://2lnr.com/compare.md) lists it alongside point.me and Roame with the same neutral treatment.

## Where 2LNR fits, and where it doesn't

The 2LNR column of the table, stated plainly, with the limits in the same breath as the capability.

### What it's built for

- Upgrade space on American, Delta and Alaska per flight and date, including the American systemwide and Delta certificate space award searches don't show
- A calendar across a month of dates per route, rather than one query per date
- Award availability across [more than 20 airlines](https://2lnr.com/awards.md) in the same calendar format, the next 14 days free and the full horizon on Pro
- Daily monitoring with uncapped alert rules on Pro, by email, SMS, in-app and push
- A free plan with the next 14 days of upgrade space, refreshable on demand, and no credit card

### What it isn't

- Not a booking tool. It shows you where space is; the airline sells the ticket and applies the certificate
- Upgrade coverage is three carriers, not the whole industry. If your certificates are with United or Lufthansa, this isn't your tool
- No hotel award search and no free-night certificates. PointsYeah covers that, we don't
- No alerts on the free plan, and a 14-day window rather than 60. ExpertFlyer's and seats.aero's free tiers both include a standing watch
- Not a static seat-comfort library. It reads the live seat map for a flight you're tracking and scores the open seats; it doesn't rate cabins by aircraft type

The longer argument for the calendar model is on [why 2LNR](https://2lnr.com/why-2lnr.md), and the workflow for American certificates is in the [SWU search guide](https://2lnr.com/guides/swu-search.md).

## Frequently asked questions

**What is the best award search tool for upgrades?**

For upgrade certificate space it depends on the airline. As of July 2026, ExpertFlyer's Elite tier carries an expanded American systemwide upgrade search with exact seat counts and a calendar up to 330 days out, and 2LNR tracks American systemwide upgrade inventory, Delta Global and Regional Upgrade Certificate space, and Alaska first-class upgrade space in a calendar on every plan. As of August 2026 seats.aero Pro also had upgrade finders for Alaska first class, Air Canada eUpgrades, Emirates, United PlusPoints and JetBlue Mint, and as of September 2026 PointsYeah Premium offers United upgrade alerts. AwardFares, and the award searches in seats.aero and PointsYeah, look for award seats rather than upgrade inventory, which is a different bucket: an American systemwide upgrade clears against C-class inventory (A class for Flagship First), and an award search will not show it to you. If your question is about miles rather than certificates, one of those three is the better tool.

**What is the best free ExpertFlyer alternative?**

It depends which ExpertFlyer feature you are replacing, and no single free tool replaces all of them. For free award search, seats.aero's free tier returns pre-collected results in the next 60 days and includes availability alerts, and PointsYeah's free tier includes flight, hotel and deal alerts plus its Daydream Explorer. For free upgrade availability on American, Delta and Alaska, 2LNR's free plan shows a rolling 14-day calendar you can refresh on demand, with mailbox trip import and loyalty tracking, and no credit card, though alerts start at Pro. What no free tool here replaces is ExpertFlyer's own free plan, which gives permanent seat maps for more than 400 airlines and one standing notification; that is genuinely free and worth keeping alongside whatever else you use.

**Which tool shows AA systemwide upgrade space?**

Two. ExpertFlyer shows it on every paid tier, one route and date at a time on Basic and Premium, and in an expanded search on its Elite tier, at $19.99 a month billed annually, which is $239.88 a year: exact seat counts by class, a calendar view, region-to-region search, and pre-monitored high-demand American routes up to 330 days out, as of September 2026. 2LNR shows the same inventory in its upgrade matrix on every plan, free for the next 14 departure days and across all 331 days on Pro at $175 a year, and adds Delta Global and Regional Upgrade Certificate space and Alaska first-class upgrade space, which ExpertFlyer's expanded search does not cover. Neither tool applies the certificate: you do that on aa.com or in the American app, though you may need to contact American for a London Heathrow departure or an eligible British Airways transatlantic flight. The step-by-step workflow is in the [SWU search guide](https://2lnr.com/guides/swu-search.md).

**seats.aero vs AwardFares: which is better?**

Neither is better outright; they trade cached breadth against live depth. seats.aero pre-collects award space across 20-plus mileage programs so results are instant and wide, at the cost of a listing sometimes being gone by the time you see it, which is why its Pro tier adds live search on any route. AwardFares runs live searches across roughly 17 programs on its paid tiers, compares two programs at once on Gold and five on Diamond, meters searches at 100 a day on Gold, and refreshes as often as once a minute on Diamond. Use seats.aero when the destination is still open, AwardFares when you are solving a specific trip or deciding which program to transfer to. Pricing as of July 2026: seats.aero Pro $9.99 a month or $99.99 a year; AwardFares Gold $9.99 a month, Diamond $19.99 a month, annual billing about 17 percent less.

**PointsYeah vs seats.aero: which should I use?**

PointsYeah if your points are spread across airline and hotel programs, or if you want the strongest free tier: it searches 21 airline programs and six hotel programs by NerdWallet's count, free-night certificates included, and its free plan carries flight, hotel and deal alerts. seats.aero if you are chasing airline award space specifically and want the widest net, more airline programs, a Partner API and a browser extension that surfaces award pricing next to a cash search. On price, PointsYeah Premium is $19.99 a month or $119.95 a year as of September 2026, and seats.aero Pro is $9.99 a month or $99.99 a year. For upgrades, seats.aero Pro had finders for five airlines as of August 2026, and PointsYeah Premium offers United upgrade alerts as of September 2026.

**Do any of these tools book the flight for you?**

No. Every tool on this page, 2LNR included, shows you availability; the airline or loyalty program sells the ticket and applies the certificate. That matters most for award space, where a result can display and still fail to book, so verify with the program before transferring points, and for upgrade certificates, where American, Delta and Alaska own the waitlist and the application. The practical habit is the same either way: confirm the space live at the moment you act, then act immediately.

**Is it worth paying for more than one of these?**

Often yes, and the overlap is smaller than the marketing suggests. A common pairing is one award tool for open-ended discovery, seats.aero, AwardFares or PointsYeah, plus one tool for the inventory that award search cannot see if you hold upgrade certificates: ExpertFlyer Elite or 2LNR for American systemwide upgrades, and 2LNR for Delta certificates. Free tiers make that cheaper than it sounds: ExpertFlyer's free seat maps, seats.aero's 60-day free window, PointsYeah's free alerts and 2LNR's free 14-day upgrade calendar can all sit side by side at no cost while you work out which paid tier you actually need.
