# How to check AA systemwide upgrade (SWU) availability

To check AA systemwide upgrade availability, look at C-class inventory on the flight before you book or apply the certificate. C is the upgrade bucket American loads SWU space into (A class covers Flagship First); if it shows zero seats, an applied SWU waitlists instead of confirming. 2LNR's upgrade matrix shows that space as seat counts per flight and date, free for the next 14 days.

Reviewed September 30, 2026.

New to SWUs? For earning and using the certificates, start with [American Airlines systemwide upgrades](https://2lnr.com/about/aa/systemwide-upgrades.md). This page covers finding the space. Want the inventory bucket itself explained? See [AA C-class availability](https://2lnr.com/guides/aa-c-class-availability.md). Have a specific question? The [systemwide upgrade FAQ](https://2lnr.com/guides/systemwide-upgrade-faq.md) probably answers it. Already waitlisted? See [how the American Airlines upgrade waitlist works](https://2lnr.com/guides/upgrade-waitlist.md).

**Key insight:** Upgrade inventory is visible before you ticket. Booking a flight where C class is already open turns an SWU from a waitlist gamble into an instant confirm, and that's the entire point of searching first.

## How do I check whether SWU space is available on my flight?

A systemwide upgrade clears into C inventory, or A for Flagship First. Either that inventory is open on your flight or it isn't. 2LNR tracks upgrade space on the American routes it covers, re-checked continuously, so you can see the answer by date before you attach a certificate. Seeing C open isn't clearing: American's upgrade list runs in its own order, and the list page explains it.

### How to search for SWU space, step by step

Five steps take you from a route in mind to a confirmed premium cabin. The order matters: availability decides the outcome, so it comes before the certificate.

1

### Pick the route and rough dates

Start from where you actually need to fly. SWU value concentrates on long-haul flights with lie-flat business cabins, so if your dates are flexible, plan to compare several departure days rather than one.

2

### Open a calendar of upgrade space

In the 2LNR upgrade matrix, select American Airlines and your route. Each cell shows whether upgrade space is open on that flight and date, with exact seat counts, so you can read a month at a glance. If the bucket itself is new to you, [what C-class availability means on American](https://2lnr.com/guides/aa-c-class-availability.md) covers how the number is set and why it moves.

3

### Book a flight where C is already open

If C shows seats before you ticket, buy that flight, apply the SWU, and it confirms instantly with no waitlist. Book a regular Main Cabin fare or higher; Basic Economy fares bought on or after May 18, 2026 are not SWU-eligible.

4

### If nothing is open, set an alert

Upgrade inventory opens and closes continuously as American's revenue management adjusts each flight. A 2LNR alert on the route and dates emails or texts you the moment SWU space appears, which is available on the Pro plan. You can set an alert from any matrix cell, from the route row, or from the Alerts page.

5

### Apply the SWU and verify on aa.com

Add the certificate to your reservation on aa.com or the AA app; 2LNR shows inventory but cannot apply the upgrade for you. Click Update data on the flight right before you act to confirm the space is still there. A waitlisted SWU can clear automatically when C space opens, but confirming against space you have already found is faster and certain.

## Check connections segment by segment

An SWU clears one flight at a time, not one trip at a time. So before you book a connecting itinerary, check each segment on its own rather than reading the trip as a single yes or no.

### Every segment needs its own C-class space

On an MSY to DFW to LHR itinerary, the certificate is evaluated against the domestic flight and the transatlantic flight separately. The long-haul leg can confirm at booking while the short leg waitlists, and a half-confirmed trip is the ordinary outcome rather than a ticketing error. A waitlisted segment can clear later if C-class space opens on that specific flight.

### Search each segment as its own row

There is no single availability number for a connection. In the upgrade matrix, search MSY to DFW and DFW to LHR as two routes: each gets its own row with its own upgrade seat counts per date. Comparing the two rows side by side is what tells you which departure day gives you both legs, and which one gives you only the leg that matters. With Pro, the [connection planner](https://2lnr.com/lp/route-explorer.md) shows whether each leg of a connecting routing has upgrade space.

### Prioritize the long-haul segment

Almost all of the value sits on the long flight, where the premium cabin is lie-flat and you spend most of the journey. When only one segment has open C class, book around that one and accept the short leg as a waitlist; a two-hour connection in a recliner is a small thing to trade. If the long-haul segment is the one showing zero, a different connecting point or a different departure day usually beats waiting on it.

## What the free plan shows, and what it doesn't

The search workflow above works on either plan. The difference is how far ahead you can look and whether the tool watches for you.

### Free: the next 14 days

The free plan shows upgrade space for AA, Delta, and Alaska departures in a rolling 14-day window, with no credit card. For a trip that's already close, that's the whole tool.

### Pro: the planning horizon

Most SWU decisions happen months out, when you're choosing which flight to buy. Pro opens the full 331-day horizon and unlimited email and SMS alerts for $175 a year or $50 a quarter. If the 14-day window is the thing stopping you, that's what Pro removes.

## SWU search questions

**What booking class do AA SWUs clear into?**

C class on the large majority of routes: Main Cabin to Flagship Business on long-haul and widebody flights, and Main Cabin to First on two-cabin domestic aircraft. Upgrades from Business to Flagship First clear into A class, but only where American still sells that cabin: on 777-300ERs not yet refitted, for travel before November 19, 2026, and on the transcontinental A321T, for travel before March 28, 2027. Your booked fare class decides eligibility, and American also uses it to break waitlist ties; most Main Cabin fares or higher qualify, while Basic Economy fares bought on or after May 18, 2026 do not.

**How far in advance can I search SWU space?**

American loads schedules and inventory roughly 331 days before departure, so upgrade space can exist from the day a flight becomes bookable. 2LNR's Pro plan covers that full 331-day horizon and the free plan covers the next 14 days; ExpertFlyer's Elite-tier AA SWU search reaches up to 330 days out, as of September 2026. Inventory loaded at schedule open changes many times before departure, so a single check is never the whole story.

**What is the difference between SWU availability and award availability?**

They are separate inventory pools. SWU availability is upgrade inventory, C class on American, that clears a certificate applied to a paid ticket. Award availability is a seat you book outright with miles, released into award fare buckets. A flight can have award space and no upgrade space, or the reverse, so always check the pool that matches the certificate or miles you are holding.

**Can I check SWU availability without holding an SWU?**

Yes. Upgrade inventory is visible before you ticket and has nothing to do with which certificates you hold. Checking C class first is exactly how experienced Executive Platinum members plan: find the flight where space is already open, buy it, then apply the SWU for an instant confirmation instead of a waitlist.

**Can I search SWU space on partner airlines like British Airways?**

2LNR reads award seats on more than 20 airlines, and British Airways is not one of them, so there is no BA calendar here to check. The systemwide upgrade rule is separate and still holds: an SWU can be applied to BA-marketed and BA-operated transatlantic flights, and to BA-operated ones carrying an AA flight number, when the itinerary includes at least one American-marketed flight. 2LNR's upgrade matrix covers American-operated flights, so search AA metal here and confirm British Airways space with American directly. Flights operated by other oneworld partners are not eligible for an SWU at all.
