# What happens to an SWU when your plans change

A systemwide upgrade is a certificate, and certificates have deadlines and edge cases. This page covers what happens when the flight cancels, when the certificate expires before you fly, when you want one waitlisted on more than one flight, and when the space you can see does not match what American tells you on the phone.

Reviewed September 8, 2026.

New to SWUs? Start with [how to earn and use systemwide upgrades](https://2lnr.com/about/aa/systemwide-upgrades.md), then the [SWU search workflow](https://2lnr.com/guides/swu-search.md).

**The short version:** SWU availability depends on upgrade inventory, [C class](https://2lnr.com/guides/aa-c-class-availability.md) on most American flights, not on open business seats. Every 2LNR member can search the next 14 days free, and Pro opens the full 331-day schedule. 2LNR finds, monitors, and notifies; American Airlines owns the rules, the waitlist, and applying the certificate.

## Waitlists, cancellations and expiry

**If a business seat is open and I'm first on the waitlist, am I guaranteed the upgrade?**

Not necessarily. Being first means you are first in priority order when upgrade inventory becomes available, but the upgrade only processes when American opens that inventory on the flight. If American never releases upgrade inventory before departure, no one on the waitlist clears, regardless of status or position. Being first still puts you in the best possible position, so set an alert in 2LNR to know the instant inventory opens. Better yet, search before you book: choose a flight where upgrade space is already open, book it, and confirm the upgrade with American right away. If it doesn't confirm immediately, American's 24-hour refund policy (for tickets booked at least two days before departure) lets you cancel and rethink. The full ordering and clearing mechanics are in [how the American Airlines upgrade list works](https://2lnr.com/guides/upgrade-waitlist.md).

**What are my rights when a flight confirmed with an SWU is canceled or has a major schedule change?**

In a schedule change or irregular operations (IRROPS), American's policy protects you in your ticketed cabin. Call an AA agent and have the ticket reissued as soon as possible. If you connect your inbox to 2LNR, your flights are automatically monitored for schedule changes, with notifications pushed to your email or phone.

**Can one SWU be waitlisted on more than one flight?**

Yes. You can waitlist more flights than you have SWUs available, because a certificate is not deducted from your account until it actually clears.

**Can I change a flight with a confirmed SWU after the certificate has expired?**

Yes, as long as the SWU confirmed before its expiration date. You cannot waitlist new flights after expiration. Call American for the change, and check 2LNR first so the flight you're changing to has upgrade inventory you can confirm into immediately.

## When 2LNR and American disagree

**Why does 2LNR show SWU availability but American says no when I call?**

2LNR shows inventory as of the time it was last checked, and airline inventory changes constantly. By the time you call, the space may have already closed (sometimes the opposite happens, too): another passenger, another transaction, or a revenue management adjustment can take it within seconds. Agents can also struggle to apply SWUs to already-booked flights; the best ones search for upgrade space as if pricing a new itinerary, and sometimes it takes hanging up and calling again (HUCA, as AvGeeks say). Before you call, always click Update data on the flight to confirm the space in real time, and if it verifies, act right away.

**Why does SWU inventory appear on 2LNR but not on aa.com?**

2LNR reads availability from the airline's reservation system, while aa.com shows a filtered customer view that doesn't always reflect every open bucket, for example if you have no SWUs ready to redeem or you're searching for more seats than the flight has open for immediate upgrade. Always confirm with American before acting. For what the upgrade bucket itself is and why a raw C count is not a promise, see [AA C-class availability](https://2lnr.com/guides/aa-c-class-availability.md).

## Verifying availability before you call

**How do I know the availability I see is still valid before I call American?**

Click Update data on the flight. It confirms availability in real time at that exact moment. Inventory moves fast, so verify immediately before calling American or opening aa.com.

**I set up alerts but don't receive them, and availability disappears when I verify. What's happening?**

Those are two separate things. For alerts not arriving: check your spam folder, verify your notification settings in your 2LNR account, and confirm the alert is active and set for the correct flight, date, and cabin. If everything is configured correctly and still nothing arrives, contact 2LNR support. For availability disappearing within seconds of clicking Update data: that's not an error. Inventory genuinely opened and closed in the window between when 2LNR detected it and when you checked. It happens on popular flights where several members are watching the same space. When the next alert fires, act on it immediately.

## Planning around the expiry date

**I had SWUs expire unused last year. How do I plan better?**

Book flights where you can confirm the upgrade immediately, which means starting in the upgrade matrix before you book. SWUs are valid through March 31 after the status year in which you earn them, so plan the certificates into trips early rather than hunting for a home in the final weeks. With 2LNR you don't have to wait until the last minute to confirm.
