# Airline upgrade certificates compared: SWUs, GUCs, RUCs and more

An airline upgrade certificate is a one-cabin upgrade you earn or select, then apply to a flight. American calls it a systemwide upgrade (SWU), Delta issues Global and Regional Upgrade Certificates (GUCs and RUCs), and Alaska issues milestone certificates. All of them confirm only where the airline has opened upgrade space, except a Delta GUC into domestic First or Premium Select, which Delta clears from any unsold seat on request.

## What each certificate is

One sentence each. Every carrier page has the full rules.

### American SWU

A systemwide upgrade is an American Airlines certificate for one cabin up, earned as a Loyalty Point Reward. [How SWUs are earned and used](https://2lnr.com/about/aa/systemwide-upgrades.md).

### Delta GUC

A Global Upgrade Certificate is the Delta Diamond Medallion Choice Benefit that moves you up one cabin on Delta and select partner flights. [The full GUC guide](https://2lnr.com/about/dl/global-upgrade-certificates.md) is the place for expiry and clearing detail.

### Delta RUC

A Regional Upgrade Certificate is the Platinum and Diamond Choice Benefit for one cabin up on Delta flights, on the routes where complimentary upgrades run. [The full RUC guide](https://2lnr.com/about/dl/regional-upgrade-certificates.md).

### Alaska milestone certificate

An Alaska upgrade certificate is a code you choose as an Atmos Rewards milestone reward, good for one person on one one-way trip. [How to use an Alaska certificate](https://2lnr.com/about/as/upgrade-certificates.md).

2LNR does not track United PlusPoints, so they are not in this table; [how United PlusPoints work](https://2lnr.com/about/ua/pluspoints.md) sets them beside these certificates. For the other ways an upgrade clears, including complimentary status upgrades, see [how to get upgraded](https://2lnr.com/guides/how-to-get-upgraded.md).

## Upgrade certificates side by side

Who earns each one, what it does, where it works and who can use it. Programs change often; the dates under Sources show when each row was read.

The Delta Medallion Year for 2026 selections ends on January 31, 2027. Status earned during 2026 belongs to the 2027 Medallion Year, which ends January 31, 2028. American's systemwide upgrades and Delta's partner airlines come from each airline's own terms, so read the carrier page before you book around one.

## Which airline upgrade certificate is easiest to use?

A Delta GUC on a domestic flight, since Delta says it clears into any unsold First or Premium Select seat on request. For the rest, pick a flight with open upgrade space, because ease comes down to what happens when the space is closed.

### Certificates that can wait on a list

American and Delta certificates on their own flights, and Alaska long-haul requests, can wait on a list and clear later if space opens. Delta puts certificates ahead of complimentary upgrades, and orders waitlisted certificates by Medallion tier, then by request time.

### Certificates with no waitlist

Alaska's rules let a certificate in North America confirm only when space is open, with no list to wait on. A British Airways transatlantic SWU can't be waitlisted, and neither can a Delta certificate on a partner-operated flight. Check space first on those, because a miss leaves nothing waiting for you.

### Partner flights have extra rules

A Delta GUC reaches select partner flights, and an American SWU reaches British Airways across the Atlantic. Alaska certificates apply only to Alaska-marketed flights. On American-operated flights, Atmos elite members can get complimentary upgrades instead.

### Pick the flight first

Pick the flight, not the certificate. Where 2LNR shows upgrade space open on your route and date, a certificate has something to confirm into; where it shows none, there's nothing to confirm into yet.

## How to check space for each one

2LNR checks upgrade space on American, Delta and Alaska and shows it by route and date, so you can look before you apply anything.

## Frequently asked questions

**What is the difference between an SWU and a GUC?**

An SWU is American Airlines' certificate and a GUC is Delta's. Both move you up one cabin, and an SWU confirms only where American has opened upgrade space, while a Delta GUC clears into any unsold domestic First or Premium Select seat on request and needs open space only for Delta One and partner cabins. They differ in who earns them (Loyalty Point Rewards at American, a Diamond Medallion Choice Benefit at Delta), in where they are valid, and in when they expire: an SWU runs to March 31 of the year after the status year it was earned, a GUC to the end of the Medallion Year it was selected for.

**How does a Delta RUC compare with a GUC or an SWU?**

A Delta Regional Upgrade Certificate moves you up one cabin on Delta flights on the routes where complimentary upgrades run, and Platinum and Diamond members can choose it. A Global Upgrade Certificate, for Diamond members only, also reaches long-haul Delta One and select partner flights. An American SWU works on American flights and on British Airways across the Atlantic. All three need open upgrade space for most cabins.

**Are airline upgrade certificates transferable?**

Mostly yes, with limits. American's systemwide upgrades can be gifted but not sold. Alaska certificates are transferable, with one person and one one-way trip per code, and cannot be bartered, bought or sold. Delta certificates can be used for you and for companions on the booking. Read each airline's terms before you hand one over.

**Which airline upgrade certificate is easiest to use?**

On a flight with no open upgrade space, none of them is easy; on a flight with some, all of them are. The difference is the waitlist. American and Delta certificates can wait on their own flights and may clear later. An Alaska certificate in North America, or a Delta certificate on a partner flight, can't wait. Check space first and the certificate type matters much less.

**Do certificates outrank complimentary status upgrades?**

On Delta, yes: certificates have higher priority than complimentary Medallion upgrades. At American, a request backed by a systemwide upgrade clears ahead of a complimentary one at the same status. The full order is in the upgrade priority guide.
