Earned as Loyalty Point Rewards selections from the 175,000 Loyalty Point milestone (up to four at 250,000), and at Million Miler levels. SWUs work on American flights and on British Airways transatlantic flights, in an eligible fare class, and upgrade you to the next class of service. No cash co-pay on most routes. There's nothing to request; AA's system processes them automatically. Clearing windows vary by tier: Executive Platinum up to 100 hours before departure, Platinum Pro up to 72 hours, Platinum up to 48 hours, and Gold up to 24 hours. Within a tier, the list sorts by rolling 12-month Loyalty Point total. Here's how to decide. ### Long-haul international (6+ hours) **First choice: SWU.** The cabin differential is highest here, making this the best use of your limited SWU inventory. **Alternative: paid upgrade**, if the cash price is reasonable relative to a revenue Flagship Business ticket and you want to preserve SWUs for other trips. ### Domestic / short-haul (under 4 hours) **First choice: complimentary upgrade.** As an EP or PP you're high on the list, and it's free and automatic. **Don't spend SWUs here**, unless yours are about to expire and you have no international travel planned. ### Medium-haul (4-6 hours, e.g., transcon or Caribbean) **Judgment call.** A red-eye in lie-flat Flagship Business is a legitimate SWU target, but a daytime flight in recliner first class is better left to the comp upgrade list. SWUs are also scarce. Your status tier doesn't grant any: they come from Loyalty Point Rewards, first at the 175,000 Loyalty Point milestone and up to four at 250,000, and from Million Miler levels. Deploying a small number strategically on the right routes is what maximizes their total annual value. **Should I apply for an upgrade or wait for a complimentary upgrade?** For domestic flights where you have high elite status (Executive Platinum or Platinum Pro), waiting for the complimentary upgrade is often the right call, because it costs nothing and your priority puts you near the top of the list. For international flights where the cabin gap is significant, use an SWU when confirmed inventory exists. Never use a valuable upgrade certificate where a complimentary upgrade would have cleared anyway. **What does upgrade inventory availability mean?** Upgrade inventory is the pool of premium cabin seats that airlines release for upgrades, separate from seats sold as revenue tickets. When upgrade inventory is open on a flight, a systemwide upgrade can confirm immediately. When inventory is closed, the SWU goes on a waitlist and may or may not clear. A miles or cash offer works differently: American shows one only when an upgrade-eligible seat is available.
