AAdvantage Loyalty Point Rewards: milestones and systemwide upgrades

Executive Platinum status brings no systemwide upgrades on its own. You get them by choosing them as a Loyalty Point Rewards pick: one choice at 175,000 Loyalty Points, which can be 2 SWUs, and two more choices at 250,000, each of which can be 2 SWUs. The milestones stack, so by 250,000 that is up to six.

How and when do you choose?

You choose in your AAdvantage account after you reach the milestone, and American emails you when you qualify. If you qualify in 2026, you can choose any time between the date you qualify and March 31, 2027. With more than one choice, you can take one now and the other later. Status itself, Executive Platinum included, doesn't hand you certificates. Executive Platinum begins at 200,000 Loyalty Points, so the 175,000 choice arrives before you reach it, and a strong Platinum Pro year can already have SWUs in hand.

The SWU only exists once you pick it, so a reward left unchosen can't be spent, and a selection is final once made. Check your account for pending choices as you cross each milestone. Our loyalty dashboard forecasts where your year ends, so you can see which milestone you're on course for.

When do the SWUs expire?

An SWU is valid through the status membership year that applies to the date you qualified for the reward. American's own example: unlock a reward on March 1, 2025, choose an SWU any time up to March 31, 2026, and it stays valid until March 31, 2027. The sooner you choose, the longer you have to use it. The upgrade has to confirm before it expires, though the trip can happen later.

The full rule set, including Million Miler levels, three-segment use and British Airways flights, sits on the systemwide upgrades reference.

Spending them once you have them

An SWU confirms only into open upgrade space, so the choice that matters after the menu is where to use it. Start with how to find open SWU space, then plan the year with the Executive Platinum guide. 2LNR shows which flights have upgrade space open, and on Pro an upgrade alert tells you when a flight you want opens up.
