Decide the cabin, not just the route

Award inventory is released per cabin. The same flight can be wide open in economy and completely shut in business, so "is there award space on this flight?" is not answerable until you say which cabin you would actually accept. Decide that first; it halves the search.

Check the airline that operates the metal

Is award availability the same thing as upgrade availability?
